Let's Break This Down

 

Greg Glassman founded CrossFit®, Inc. in 2000. Coach Glassman spent years training elite athletes, in which he found the best way to achieve an elite fitness was not through specialization of training, but rather through “constantly varied, functional movement, performed at high intensity.” So let us break this down a little bit more…

“Constantly Varied” means that every day will bring a different workout, a.k.a. “WOD,” which will included a wide variety of exercises in many different formats. We will train the major lifts such as squats, deadlifts, presses, clean and jerks, and snatches. We will work to master a number of gymnastic skills such as pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, and holds. And finally, we will train our cardiorespiratory endurance through running, rowing, kettle bell swings, box jumps, and jump ropes.

“Functional Movement” refers to movement patterns that mimic movements of our every day lives. We train these functional movements to perfect and maintain the safest, most powerful positions to accomplish these movements throughout our lives. There are a large number of misconceptions out there about CrossFit, but the truth is that what we do in the gym is essentially the same thing you do at home, work, doing yard work, moving boxes to the basement, etc. If you have ever hoisted a large bag of dog food off of the bottom shelf at the grocery store, you are already mimicking a deadlift. Putting a large crock pot on the top shelf if your pantry is the same thing as doing a shoulder press in the gym. At CrossFit Sworn, we believe in correct positioning in everything we to do to help you maintain and perform optimally in anything you do.

“High Intensity” is a concept that in a CrossFit gym is different than going to a typical gym. In a CrossFit box, intensity leads to faster, better results, in a fraction of the time. Some people will say “I had a great workout today, man. I was in the gym for three and a half hours.” But for a CrossFitter, you will hear something along the lines of “Wow, that workout was nuts and I still finished in 9 minutes.” Intensity is the greatest, scalable part of CrossFit. Our trainers will strive to make sure that you have an intense workout based upon yourself and your abilities.

Now, quickly, let us talk about what CrossFit is NOT

• …for people that want a “quick fix” exercise program. CrossFit is a long-term commitment to a life style change that will bring about more fulfilling results now and throughout your life.

• …for people that are unwilling to step outside of their box to try new things. Everyday in CrossFit, people find that they are more talented, skilled, and/or athletic than he or she had previously believed. Trying new things allows one to discover that he or she can do something well that was unexpected (oh, and it brings about faster results).
• …for people that are afraid to lose their egos and be a part of a thriving community. CrossFit is a great community, and at CrossFit Sworn, a family. We will support each other in everything we do. We do encourage healthy competition to better our athletes, but having an ego will only affect yourself.

Our sport of CrossFit is thriving because of the community that has been built around it. We are all in it together, and it is where everyone around will help you to accomplish your goals.
